Do you remember the scene from the movie Wolf of Wall Street where Jordan Belfort and his team raise capital for Steve Madden and everyone is going crazy on the phones? Well that depicted an Initial Public Offering, which is better known as an IPO. An IPO is the first time retail investors were able to purchase stock of a previously privately owned company. Just like in the movie, these events are highly marketed and covered by Wall Street and investors.

However, IPOs do not always go according to plan. There have been several highly anticipated IPOs recently (Beyond Meat, UBER, Lyft, Zoom to name a few) that have had mixed results.

Moral of the story – chasing flashy/sexy IPOs may make for good dinner table conversation, but they don’t always work out as planned!
